Job Description

The Flight Operations Coordinator monitors crew, sensor and aircraft flying status. The coordinator works with the Flight Operations Supervisor to dispatch the flight crews with all necessary flight data for acquisition missions based on weather forecasts and other project-related factors. The coordinator acts as a liaison between surveyors, project managers, and flight crews.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assess flight crew and aircraft availability, including subcontractors and leased aircraft and sensors.
  • Assess mission requirements and complexity and assign pilot and sensor operators.
  • Receive flight maps from project managers and assemble flight packet containing necessary. mission parameters; ensure that safety briefing is signed and followed.
  • Prioritize missions according to weather, deadlines and efficiency.
  • Dispatch crews to locations based on weather forecasts and other project-related factors.
  • Respond to project manager/surveyor updates and relay to flight crews.
  • Receive Daily Activity Reports, and Flight Logs and update each project's status.
  • Coordinate with geo-positioning team on post-acquisition data QC and inform flight crews of reflights in a timely manner.
  • Maintain data base of crew, sensor, and aircraft locations as well as maintenance status and flight hours.
  • Acquire and maintain necessary export licenses and monitor federal export compliance.
  • Comply with all relevant Aviation Safety and QHSSE procedures.

Other Job Duties

  • Remain current on changes within the industry through publications, and continuing education.
  • Project a professional appearance and cooperative attitude, maintain high ethical standards of confidentiality in representing the company to insure a professional representation at all times.
  • Comply with the requirements of the company's documented QHSSE system and contribute to the success and continuous improvement of the program.
  • Assume other activities, duties and responsibilities as needed.


  • BS/BA degree in a mapping related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of aviation concepts and regulations, though a pilot's license is not necessary.
  • Computer skills in Word and Excel.
  • Must be available to respond to the flight crews at all hours.
  • Ability to make rapid decisions regarding dispatching of flight crews.
  • Have a thorough understanding of geospatial technologies and products.
  • Access, understand and interpret meteorological forecasts.
  • Knowledge of aerial acquisition sensor systems.
  • Must be thorough and attentive to detail.

Physical Requirements

This position requires sitting (70%), standing (15%), and walking (15%). Additional physical requirements are as follows: 

  • Requires lifting materials weighing approximately 30 lbs.
  • The efficient use of accepted tools of the trade, i.e. computers, computer monitors, mouse, keyboard, and maps.
  • Ability to access file cabinets that stand at various heights.
  • Requires ability to understand, speak and follow English instruction.

Working Conditions

The physical surroundings for this position include an office setting, aircraft, hangar, and deployed locations. Long hours and some travel, often on short notice, are required. Travel can be both domestic and international.
