Roles and Responsibilities

With limited supervision and moderate decision-making:

  • Mobilization and demobilization of drill rig trucks for jobs as directed.
  • Daily field and yard operations of rig, i.e. handling drill pipe, mixing drill mud and use of other related equipment including, but not limited to, electric and gas welding.
  • Perform various techniques of drilling including auger drilling, mud rotary, air rotary, carbide bit coring, and diamond bit coring.
  • Perform various types of soil and rock sampling including standard penetration test, Texas cone penetration, and Shelby tubes.
  • Observe and follow all company safety rules and procedures.
  • Support and encourage continuous improvement of the company's processes, including safety program and quality management system.
  • Be responsible for coordinating and preparing equipment and supplies for drilling assignments.
  • Program future field equipment and supply needs weekly, monthly, and quarterly
  • Reconnaissance of the project site to determine locations, site access, equipment needs and performs other duties to complete the assignment.
  • Direct helper in drilling under various conditions and to obtain soil and rock samples; performs other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and the crew personnel.
  • Responsible for obtaining field samples and data as requested and required by engineers and clients.
  • Direct and/or assist the Helper in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and its associated equipment to ensure safe operational conditions.
  • Responsible for installing and monitoring instrumentation associated with drilling operations.
  • Responsible for client satisfaction and controlling job related costs.
  • Familiar with and follow DOT and IFTA regulations.
  • Establish rules and instructions.
  • Be able to travel extensively (required), both domestically and internationally.
  • Meet all utilization goals as determined by Activity Center Manager or supervisor.
  • Complete work assignment in a safe and timely manner
  • Complete proper job paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Communicate tactfully and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Maintain effective work relations with those encountered in the course of employment.
  • Come to work regularly and on time.
  • Execute work duties in an organized and efficient manner.
  • Maintain organized and clean work area.
  • Work well while under supervision.

Requirements

  • Good mechanical and technical aptitude.
  • Ability to install groundwater monitoring well, piezometers, and inclinometers.
  • Familiarity with the geology of DFW area.
  • Ability to classify soils and rock samples on-site.
  • Must have applicable state drilling licenses from states where company is performing projects or intends to perform projects.
  • Possess or able to obtain valid passport.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable with various types of drilling equipment and techniques.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities with Company safety rules and procedures.
  • Good communication skills, including verbal, written and basic math skills.
  • Must have appropriate and current state Driller's License.
  • Must have current CDL driver's license with motor vehicle record in compliance with Company and DOT policies
  • Have good Supervisory skills
  • Must be equipment oriented and understand mechanics of drilling machinery.
  • Must be in good physical condition, able to work in all weather conditions, and capable of wearing appropriate health and safety equipment, including but not limited to a respirator.
  • Must be physically fit to work in strenuous manual labor position with possible hazardous waste exposure. Must able be able to meet physical parameters of Environmental (Type IV) physical.
  • Able to complete OSHA 29CFR1910.120 40 Hour course and appropriate refreshers and other safety courses by written exam
  • Able to pass random and annual drug screens with negative results.
  • Required to lift heavy equipment and materials, often in excess of 100 lbs.
  • Background check results must be acceptable for entrance to government sites and chemical plants, and acceptable for issuance of TWIC card.

Training

  • Must be able to complete OSHA 29CFR1910.120 40-Hour course and appropriate refreshers and other safety courses by written exam.

Physical Requirements

  • Performs heavy work exerting up to 75 pounds of force constantly, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Most work performed outdoors in undeveloped areas.
  • Driller shall be capable of pushing a standard two-handle construction wheelbarrow loaded with a typical concrete sample for a distance of 40 feet.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the fieldwork environment varies, and can be loud when working around equipment. Additionally, the field environment can be dusty, windy, wet, cold, or hot depending on the time of year and work location. Driller must be able to tolerate changing and adverse weathers conditions and working environment.

Knowledge/Skill

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2-3 years related experience is required.
  • Familiar with modern office methods, practices, procedures and equipment and is competent in correct English usage and is able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
